It is also the longest range single engine fighter jet used by the US Army and Navy, and is the most important type of aircraft for strategic bombing and escort in the European and Pacific theater of operations. The P-51 fighter jet was developed by North American Aviation and was born during World War II. It was initially invited to be developed for Britain and equipped with the British Merlin engine. It made its maiden flight on October 26, 1940, with the company model NA-73. In August 1941, it was first provided to the British Air Force for use, and the US military tested it with the XP-51 model. It was officially adopted by the US military in December 1941 and widely used in the Eurasian battlefield. After World War II, it was still used by many countries until the Korean War.
